You may think it’s too late or too intensive of a procedure to straighten a crooked or misaligned smile, but you would be wrong! Invisalign makes straightening your smile quick and easy, no matter what age you are. Dr. Michael Amir and Dr. Larry Hamer at SC Dental Group in Sherman Oaks, CA, are here to answer any questions you may have about Invisalign and help give you the smile you deserve.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a set of clear aligner trays that discreetly straighten your smile with no extra work by you! To start your Invisalign treatment, your Sherman Oaks, CA, dentists will fit you for custom aligners that you will wear all day unless you’re eating, drinking, or brushing and flossing. That means they will be on for about 22 hours a day. Since Invisalign is clear, no one will even know you’re wearing them unless you want them to know!

Each aligner is designed to subtly begin to push your teeth into the correct position to give you the smile that you desire. Every few weeks, you will switch out your aligner for a new one, and each aligner is designed to fit where your teeth have been pushed to. The process can take anywhere from 9 to 15 months, and a few times throughout this process, you will have a checkup with your dentists to be sure that you are progressing as expected. Your dentists will take this time to address any issues and check that your treatment is going according to schedule.

You have heard of dental implants, but are you convinced they could help your smile? At SC Dental Group in Sherman Oaks, CA, Dr. Michael Amir and Dr. Larry Hamer offer dental implants as the premier tooth replacement choice. While nothing looks, feels, and acts as a natural tooth does, dental implants come really close to the real thing.

The specifics on dental implants

The dental implant resembles a threaded metal screw. Made of titanium, this device goes right into your jaw bone at the extraction site. Over time, the jawbone wraps around the implant through osseointegration, thereby strengthening the supporting bone.

This feature is specific to dental implants and not conventional partials or bridgework. Once healed, the implant accepts a post and porcelain crown.

Also, if you have lost a number of teeth, your dentist can place multiple devices in your jaw to support bridgework or full dentures. As such, you get back much of the chewing power, youthful facial contours and self-confidence you had with a full complement of natural teeth.

If you're interested, see your friends at SC Dental Group for an in-depth exam and implant consultation. If all is well, you'll understand the details of your implant procedure before it begins.

After placement, your jaw and incision sites will heal. Osseointegration will happen, and when you return to the office, the dentist will attach the extension post and crown or larger appliance as your care plan outlines.

That's it. You're free to enjoy your beautiful new teeth. At home, brush twice daily, floss every day and if possible, stop smoking to keep your implant sites healthy and strong. Avoid hard foods and clenching your teeth, and frankly, you should have your implants for decades, maintains the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness (IDIA).

Five reasons to consider dental implants

To sum up, you should think carefully about dental implants because:

  1. They restore your oral function, jaw bone, gum tissue and facial features to their pre-extraction size, shape and youthfulness.
  2. Dental implants have an unlimited lifespan and rarely fail or require replacing.
  3. You care for them just as you do natural teeth--no soaking, no adhesives.
  4. Most healthy people qualify for them. You need a strong jaw bone, but if it's thin, your dentist can build it up with grafting materials.
  5. Implants work because of osseointegration, the bonding process between the implant and bone. It makes an implant device a true tooth root.

It can be challenging to maintain a white smile when so many factors can stain your teeth, but fortunately, there are steps that you can take to avoid stains, including professional teeth whitening from SC Dental Group here in the Encino, CA area. Read on to learn more about how to keep your smile bright, and contact Dr. Michael Amir and Dr. Larry Hamer at SC Dental Group if you are interested in professional whitening treatment.

Tips for Avoiding Stains on Teeth

There are several steps you can take to avoid developing stains on your teeth. One way to maintain a white smile is to practice good oral hygiene habits, which includes flossing regularly and brushing twice every day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Regularly having your teeth professionally cleaned by dental staff can also help keep your smile whiter.

Another way to prevent dental stains is to avoid foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth. Examples include coffee, red wine, cranberry juice/other dark fruit juices, tomato sauce, and certain berries, such as blueberries. Smoking also causes stains, so it is best to avoid it to maintain a white smile.

Teeth Whitening

We offer two convenient teeth whitening options at our Encino office. In-office whitening provides the fastest results, while take-home whitening is convenient and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Both methods deliver professional results and can give you the white smile you desire.

In-office whitening can whiten teeth by several shades in just one treatment. A special hydrogen peroxide gel containing a professional-strength bleaching agent is carefully brushed on the teeth. The gel is left on for about one hour before being removed. During that time, the bleaching agent in the gel gently penetrates the tooth enamel and lifts away stains and discolorations. Immediately after treatment, teeth will be noticeably whiter and brighter.

A professional take-home teeth whitening kit is another effective option for achieving a whiter smile. Some advantages of take-home kits are that you can whiten teeth when it is convenient for you and in the comfort of your own home. Take-home whitening kits include two custom trays that fit over the top and bottom rows of teeth, as well as whitening gel. When you are ready to whiten, simply add gel to each tray and place them on to your teeth for about one hour at a time. Within a few weeks, your smile will be a few shades whiter.

Did you know that oral health has an impact on overall health and well-being? Indeed, research shows that oral health problems not only affect your mouth, but they may also lead to chronic diseases and infections elsewhere in the body. This is why it is crucial to develop a good oral care routine, including daily brushing and flossing, and scheduling regular dental visits with SC Dental Group in Sherman Oaks, CA. Proudly serving the areas of Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, and Valley Village, Dr. Michael Amir and Dr. Larry Hamer are here to help prevent, detect, and treat conditions associated with your teeth and gums in a timely manner.

Oral health and overall health

Scientists found a link between chronic inflammation in your mouth and the development of systemic chronic conditions. These include respiratory issues, heart, and kidney diseases, digestive disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, and pregnancy-related complications. There is also growing evidence that some chronic conditions such as diabetes may first become apparent in oral problems and that treating one condition positively impacts the other. This is another reason why seeing your Encino area dentist on a regular basis is absolutely essential.

What you can do

  • Practicing good oral hygiene daily is key.
  • Brush and floss your teeth daily
  • Eat a healthy diet limiting sugary foods
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco
  • Replace your toothbrush regularly
  • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings
  • See your dentist right away if you notice sudden changes

It is important to develop good oral health habits early on and maintain them throughout life. If you practice good oral hygiene, you can keep your teeth for life.

Wear and tear, oral injury and staining can change the appearance of your smile, much to the detriment of your self-confidence. At SC Dental Group in Sherman Oaks, CA, Dr. Michael Amir and Dr. Larry Hamer frequently recommend porcelain veneers for these and other cosmetic problems. Individually crafted from natural-looking dental porcelain, ultra-thin veneers just may be the boost your smile needs.

What is a porcelain veneer?

Dentists also call veneers dental laminates. Similar to the hardwood laminates furniture craftsmen use, porcelain veneers are extremely thin, high-quality pieces of ceramic bonded directly over healthy, but flawed, tooth surfaces. Made in the dental lab according to X-ray imaging, photos, your dentist's instructions and your preferences, veneers dramatically improve the shape, size, and color of selected teeth.

Good health is key to veneer placement. If a tooth has suffered extensive damage from injury, decay, or abscess, a dental crown, covering the entire tooth above the gum line, would be the appropriate restoration. Veneers disguise only the front side of teeth, creating a dramatically beautiful, but realistic, appearance without significant alteration to tooth enamel.

The veneer process

After you and your dentist agree upon your treatment plan, he removes a thin portion of enamel (about 1/2 mm) from the front side of each tooth. This reduction allows the veneers to fit comfortably inside your mouth and to bite correctly with the opposite arch of teeth. The doctor also takes oral impressions which help the lab technician create a three-dimensional model of your mouth.

From there, the technician sculpts each veneer with proper shape, size, and shading. When you return to SC Dental Group in Sherman Oaks for veneer placement, Dr. Amir or Dr. Hamer will bond your veneers in place with a special resin cement which can be varied in shade to achieve the most natural appearance.

Your new smile

While dental ceramic can be brittle, the resin cement used by your dentist adds amazing strength and durability to each veneer. If you treat them gently (don't chew ice, for instance), your veneers should last more than a decade, says the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Regarding at-home care, brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush and mildly abrasive toothpaste. Floss daily, too, to remove plaque and avoid tartar build-up. Come to SC Dental Group twice a year for your check-ups and cleanings, and your dentist will assess the condition of your porcelain veneers, too.

Enjoy smiling again
